Located on the Pacific coast of Central America, between Guatemala and Honduras, El Salvador is making its presence now in the surfing world, gaining attention as a nation with a bounty of waves. It is the smallest of Central American countries and the only one not connected to the Caribbean. However, don’t let its geographical limitations be misleading, as the country’s 320 km of coastline packs a powerful punch, with a majority of the waves in the form of long right pointbreaks, some of them world class waves as Punta Roca in La Libertad, and Punta Mango located at the east side of El Salvador coastline

For its size, El Salvador could easily claim the highest density of quality pointbreaks in Central America. Toss in the tropical climate, warm water, lack of crowds, safety and you’ve got a destination that is out the oven and ready to be surfed. El Salvador the smallest country of the region with its 21.000 km2 offer you the possibility to surf, hike, dive or visit archaeological parks or museums all in the same day and a few hours away from the coast.

El Savador is divided in three diferents areas, the central area where you can visit La Libertad, is the most visited town for travelers and is the tourist destination for tradition of San Salvador people, La Libertad is located just 20 kms south of San Salvador city. in this area you can stay at El Puerto de La Libertad, and diferent beach areas like Sunzal, Cocal, San Blas, El Tunco, El Zonte. At the east side is located El Cuco just a few hours by car from the international airport, you can find other area with good waves as Punta Las Flores, and Punta Mango. At the west you can find waves as los Cobanos, Mizata.

Weather
El Salvador fluctuates between two seassons: a dry season from Nov-April and a rainy season from May-October. During the rainy season, which sees the biggest swells, mornings are typically clear and offshore, followed by sideshore winds and a more onshore flow in the afternoon that usually give way to thunderstorms in the late afternoon and early evening. The dry season has very little rain, plenty of endless sunny days, and offshores courtesy of a steady E-NE windflow that creates ideal conditions for the entire coastline

SURF SEASONS

El Salvador might have the world's most consistent surf. Here. you will fid almost year aroud waves, but if you are planning a once in a lifetime trip, maybe you are best to make it March to October, when you are almost guaranteed four feet or better daily with some heariltier swell a few days per week

March to June is pretty wave season, the rainy season is just getting underway, and the swells are already consistently. For people in the know, getting into the water as soon as the southern swells start pumping can be magical combination of clean clear water and some very nice surf.

May through September, is consistent wave season. Spend at least a week during these months and if you don`t catch great waves it is you own fault. This is the time the swell is biggest, expect four to six feet almost everyday, with ups and downs fron three to eight, The only drawback in this season is that the weather does impact the waves. Heavy rains will bring brown or off colored water down from eroding mountain streams and disorder in morning sessions, and the point breaks will be rocky, This is also the only time in El Salvador when a freak storm can blow everything out, though never for more than a couple days.

November and December is when offshore arrives, This marks the end of surf season, El Salvador style, the waves are usually small, in the three to four foot range, but clean morning and afternoon offshores aren`t uncommon, here you can expect three to four feet daily, this is great time for bring the family or learning to surf. swell can pick up too and rise over five feet, but it's not common

January and February are small, sometimes too small, but can also be good for first timers, If you have only got a short time, or if you are serios swell hound and need to be surfing everyday, this is not the time for you to visit El SAlvador, The waves often drop under two feet and it can go flat for a week at a time. That said, in the last few years El Salvador has not had a real flat sweel, and with crystal blue water and few tourist, and pretty sandy beaches this has been the time for epic sessions. We have started our last couple New years with almost nobody out in clean six foot sets all day.

The thing about El Salvador surf is that with great southern exposure and even some northern, swell can and does hit any day of the year. But there are definitely certain months where waves are almost guaranteed and others some luck is involved
